It’s no secret that business and client relationships are
not always sunshine and rainbows. Any time a need is fulfilled by a third
party, there’s room for misunderstandings, miscommunications, bad feelings, and
unhappy customers. These can occur on both ends of the arrangement, but
especially as a client it’s important to try to be as understanding as
possible, and adopt a style of interaction that promotes communication in order
to make things a win-win situation on both sides. Here are some tips for a
happy ending with your web development company:
1) They know things you don’t, so listen to their advice and
take them seriously. While this seems like a no-brainer, too often the creative
end of the stick ends up feeling like a client is being too demanding. They
have a skill that you need, so it’s in your best interest as the client to work
with, not against, your developer. Make your wants clear, and respect when they
say that something isn’t do-able or is ill advised.
2) Slow down! This may feel very urgent to you, but all you
have to do is tell them once, and keep the communication lines open about
realistic timelines for completion. It’s better not to rush, and end up with a
better overall product that you will both be happy with.
3) Communicate loud and clear. If you leave any room for
interpretation, things are bound to end up in a less than friendly way. As long
as you are clear on what you want and need, and listed to feedback, and can
come up with compromises where needed, things should be alright.
4) Talk about price up front, not after. Make price one of
the first things you talk about, so nobody feels like they got cheated on
either side at the end of it all. Be honest about opening up conversations
about price later if more work is required, and don’t wait!
5) Accept and absorb any and all knowledge that your web
development company is willing to share with you. The more you know, and the
more they can tell that you appreciate your work, the better for everyone.
